Troubleshooting:"A disk Error Has Occurred" Error

"A disk Error Has Occurred"

I am working on a computers whose HDD seems to be inaccessible.  It all began with a black screen and "A disk error has occured."  My inclination is the MBR went bad.  At this point I am trying to access the data.
Here is the trouble shooting I have been
through:
1.  Ctrl alt del (as suggested on the black screen)
2.
F8 for recovery console - result: black screen and cursor
At this point I'd decided its time to just format and start over
Attempting to Back up the data
1.  Used a SATA to USB adapter
     - the HDD spins up and seems to restart - I can't access it via the adapter
2.  Connected the HDD in another computer -
     - It is recognized in BIOS, but I cannot access the HDD from within the OS.
Is there anything else I could be trying?  Or any other suggestions anyone has?
Thanks
